The Austin River City Rec'ers is a non-profit community based wheelchair basketball team which serves Austin’s citizens with physical disabilities. The team provides recreational activities and social integration for team roster members and their families by support of sponsorship and donations. In addition, the Austin Rec'ers reach out to provide community education and disability awareness. The Austin River City Rec'ers also lead by example and provide financial assistance to youth sports organizations that promote community participation.
The Austin River City Rec'ers have been providing recreation, education, and awareness in the community for over a quarter of a century. Beginning back in 1979, an ambitious group of University of Texas students organized themselves into the University of Texas High Rollers and played competitive wheelchair basketball in the Texas Conference. As students came and went, graduating from UT, it became increasingly difficult to sustain the college team.
Two of the original "High Rollers", who had since moved into the Austin community to begin working careers, founded the Austin River City Rec'ers non-profit organization in 1989. The Rec'ers sought collaboration with the City of Austin Park and Recreation Department and concentrated on a stronger community presence by actively recruiting and welcoming anyone in the Austin area who was experiencing life with a physical disability.
Our sponsors and volunteers can be proud of the past support they have provided. We look forward to their continuing service to Austin’s citizens with disabilities and the community at large. Throughout the years the Rec'ers have been an integral part of the development and lives of many of the city’s wheelchair athletes, including several outstanding athletes who have won accolades competing worldwide in various sporting events.
The Austin Rec'ers success as a National Wheelchair Basketball Association team: Final Four appearances in 1997 and 2000, the 2006 New York City Mayor’s Cup Championship, and 2nd place of 2011 D3 National Championship. It would not be possible to achieve these awards without the continued support of our generous sponsors and tireless volunteers. Team members are grateful for the support and investment in the community. The Austin Rec'ers are proud to give back to the community through various activities, including spinal cord injury prevention programs, “overcoming adversity” presentations and educational awareness activities to show what contributions can be made by all of Austin’s citizens.
The Austin River City Rec'ers wish to extend many THANKS to our Sponsors and Community Partners.
